Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among food craving, negative affect, negative urgency and binge eating, and to test the efficacy of mental imagery task on the reduction of food craving. In study 1, with the participation of 191 college students, the mediating effect of food craving in the relationship between negative affect and binge eating was tested. It was also investigated whether negative urgency plays a moderating role in the association between negative affect and food craving. Results showed that food craving mediated the relationship between negative affect and binge eating. It was found that negative urgency moderated the effects of negative affect on binge eating only in women. In study 2, it was investigated whether mental imagery task is effective in reducing food craving and whether this efficacy is different according to the bulimic tendencies or imagery ability. Seventy-eight college students were randomly assigned to two mental imagery task groups(habituation task/distraction task) and a control group after craving induction procedure. The distraction task group in men showed more decreased food craving than the habituation task group. Furthermore, the interaction effects of bulimic tendencies with group, association between imagery ability and the variance of food craving appeared insignificant. The implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
